Heffernan’s Butchers was established in 1961 by John Heffernan at Convent Hill Ballina. His son Anthony carries on the proud family tradition today, developing the business into a fine food emporium including the Heifer and Hen restaurant which offers fine food, excellent service, elegant surroundings, select wines and classical music. We have won many awards over the years from the Retail Excellence Award – Top 50 stores 2009 and 2010 to Georgina Campbell Award, Ulster Bank Business Achievers Award and were nominated for Best restaurant Award 2013.

As you can tell food is what we do, Fine Food. All food in our delicatessen is prepared by our staff in house. Our policy is to source all our foods and ingredients from local suppliers and to prepare everything in our own abattoir, kitchen or bakery. We make homemade scones, cakes, breads, desserts, tray bakes.
We believe in supporting our local community and many of our customers are also our supplier. We view business as a circle – “what goes around comes around”. We support our local community/customers, and our local community/customers support us.

We accept group bookings for family occasions and other events and can accommodate groups with a customised menu to meet their requirements. We can also provide a separate private function area – catering for between 20 – 40 people.
We make home made scones, cakes, breads, desserts, tray bakes. Everything is baked fresh each day by our own bakers and confectioners in our own kitchen upstairs. For those special occasions we can make you a themed cake.
In November 2012 we extended our kitchen and bakery and opened a new 60 seater restaurant – The Heifer & Hen Restaurant upstairs over our existing shop, offering “early bird” , a la carte and Sunday lunch menus.
Our guarantee of full traceability is a source of great pride to us. In addition to our locally sourced meat, all our bread, cakes, salads and hot foods are prepared and baked from scratch in our own kitchen/bakery using top quality, locally sourced, fresh ingredients. We also offer a full outside catering menu for those wishing to celebrate an event in their own home or function room. Our attitude is very simple, we believe in Quality and Traceability.
We have a proud reputation for good food so as an accompaniment our fine wines are selected by Italian wine supplier Enrico Fantasia. Live piano sets the atmosphere to complete your dining experience. On certain nights we have a "theme evening” where you can enjoy food, wine and music from a selected country. Coming soon we also have casual relaxed dining option with Tapas, wine and beer being served.

Anthony Heffernan sources all his meat from local farmers in north Mayo. He hand picks every single animal before they are delivered directly to Heffernan’s fully licensed abattoir. Here they are culled, prepared , dry aged and stored to the "Heffernan’s Fine Food Standard". Anthony has won Hygiene Award for his abattoir and supplies all meat to the Heifer and Hen Restaurant and Delicatessen.
It is this hands-on approach and knowledge of the life cycle from Farm to Fork that enables Anthony Heffernan to guarantee full traceability, quality and hygiene.

Our meat is of the highest quality and is fully traceable
All of our butchers are trained to highest levels and our service is second to none.
Deli-licous fresh crispy salads, nourishing home-made soups, fresh quiches, lasagne, fish cakes, breads warm from the oven are just a few of the mouth-watering offerings prepared early each morning in our own kitchen. Club sandwiches, open sandwiches, Panini’s and wraps are all made to order. There is also a fresh pasta dish, a fish dish, a Chef's Special each day as well as a Roast of the Day. For those who want to enjoy all the nourishing value of home cooked food, in their own home, we offer our foods to go.
Great coffees, smoothies, and of course luscious desserts – brownies, tray bakes, Pavlova, cheese cakes or strawberry roulade all baked by our own confectioners.
Having a Party?
Whether you are having a birthday party, communion, barbecue, any family event or celebration, Heffernan's Fine Foods can provide you with an impressive display of quality homemade foods. From sandwich platters and finger foods to delicious hot dishes (stroganoff, curries, lasagne, quiches...) can be delivered to your home or venue. We also offer Heffernan’s own sliced meats, smoked or fresh salmon, a full range of crispy fresh salads, wholesome breads and delicious desserts. Don’t forget to order that homemade cake to celebrate that special occasion. Fresh cream and fruit, hand decorated by our own confectioners.
We bake all types of cakes for special occasions – Birthday, Retirement, Anniversary, Christening, Communions. Our specialty cakes can be themed for the occasion – Princess cake, spiderman cake, Foot ball clubs etc. Again all our cakes are made with natural ingredients in our own kitchen, using fresh cream, fresh fruit, butter icing, flavoured frosting.
Cakes can be ordered in advance.
We do a full range of desserts and cakes both to serve by the slice in the shop or to buy and take home – chocolate, coffee, carrot, lemon, tarts, brownies, cup cakes, lemon meringue, sponge, pavlova and eclairs.

“Heffernan’s seems to be a business blessed with eternal youth. It’s actually more than 50 years old – established in 1961 by John Heffernan - and yet it is hip-to-the-trip as anywhere in the West, and these days the West can mount some pretty spectacular addresses to shop and eat. Like so many other Mayo destinations, Heffernan’s reinvented itself a few years back, adding to the butcher’s shop a spiffing deli and café, whilst continuing the butchery business, which is founded on Mayo meats and their own abbattoir, where Anthony Heffernan overseas everything.
